Following this former post, I’d like to share with for today “Life’s Gone Down Low“, a gorgeous hybrid slow 70s Afro Soul Reggae Funk track from Nigeria with catchy organ parts, composed by the Nigerian twin sisters Kehinde & Taiwo Lijadu better known as “The Lijadu Sisters”.

This song is taken from their 2nd album, recorded at the legendary “DECCA Studios” in Lagos city, and released in 1976 on the mythical Nigerian record label “Afrodisia“.

It includes the following musicians :

Kehinde & Taiwo Lijadu aka The Lijadu Sisters : Writtings, Arrangelments, Lead Vocals ;

Biddy Wright : Lead Guitar, Tenor Saxophone, Percussion, Bass Guitar, Producer ;

Felix Shittu : Alto Saxophone ;

Ade Jolaoso : Bass Guitar ;

Cherry on the cake : this beautiful artwork by the mysterious “Ideas Organisation” !

One of my favorite Reggae Soul track from the African continent, discovered though the excellent Afro Rock compilation “The World Ends: Afro Rock & Psychedelia in 1970s, Nigeria” released in 2010 by the renowned reissue label “Soundway”.

I’ve been lucky enough to find an original copy in pristine condition during one of my several record digging trop in Cameroon the same year, but that’s another story..

For today, I’d like to share with you “Yatchiminou“, an uplifting catchy 70s Afro Synth Boogie track from Ivory Coast, taken from the first LP of the famous Ivorian composer & musician N’Goran Hyacinthe (known as Jimmy Hyacinthe in tribute to his idol Jimmy Hendrix, since N’Goran developed a string pinching technic of playing guitar) who modernized the Goly traditional Ivorian rhythm.

This album was produced & recorded between Paris (France) & Abidjan (Ivory Coast), at the same time he formed & leaded the Parisian band “Bozambo” composed with great Pan African musicians.

After recording several albums in the 70s & 80s, he returned to Ivory Coast in the mid 80s and became the artistic director of  the legendary local label “La Société Ivoirienne de l’Industrie du Son” (SID).

Dancefloor sure shot, instant feel-good summer track, hope you’ll like it – Enjoy !

Following this former post, I’d like to share with you for today “Ego-Ibo“, a deep 70s Afro Psychedelic Soul syncopated track from Benin, taken from the 2nd LP recorded in 1979 by the Beninese band “Les Sympathics de Porto-Novo“, leaded by the composer & musician Happy Ruffin and that was very active as a studio backing band in the late 70s & early 80s and who played for big Beninese musicians & composers of that era.

This album was released on the mythical Beninese record label “Albarika Store“, and included the following musicians :

Happy Ruffin : Composition, Guitar, Lead Vocals, Writings ;

Jean-Louis Avognon : Backing Vocals, Guitar ;

Herman F. Laleye : Bass Guitar, Leader ;

Armand Pognon : Lead Guitar, Organ ;

Georges d’Assomption : Congas ;

Marcellin Laleye : Drums ;

For today, I’d like to share with you “Njitna !” (I’m Coming !), an incredible feel-good uptempo Afro Synth Soul track from Cameroun, taken from the first album of the Cameroonian author, composer, musician & performer Ometh (Théodore Mounta), native of Foumban (west region of Cameroon), who left his country in 1979 to settle in West Africa (Cotonou, Benin’s capital).

Recorded in 1979 in Cotonou (Benin) on the legendary record label “Disques Tropiques“, this album features some great African musicians from Benin, Ivory Coast & Cameroon as :

Ometh : Arrangements, Vocals, Rhythm Guitar, Percussion ;

Louisiana (Louise Tachoua) : Vocals, Rhythm Guitar ;

Louis Wasson : Arrangements, Lead Guitar, Bass Guitar ;

Henri Ahouandjinou, Théodore Yehouenou : Trumpet ;

Dieudonné Tsanga : Organ, Strings, Piano ;

Emmanuel de Souza : Drums, Congas ;

Joseph Atchade : Tenor Saxophone ;

In the 2000s, Ometh released three other albums (2006, 2008 & 2009). He’s living in Abidjan (Ivory Coast) since 2013, and is still touring a lot in West Africa.

This song – as Ometh’s best tracks – is part of the eponym compilation I released in 2024 on my own record label “Nanga Boko Records”, in collaboration with the artist himself (thanks again to him !).

For today, I’d like to share with you “Talk To Me“, an irresistible 70s Afro Soul Boogie Funk joy maker track from Nigeria driven by gorgeous flute parts, taken from the 1st album of the Nigerian composer & flutist Tee Mac Omatshola Iseli, recorded in 1978 by the mythical EMI Nigeria studios sound engineers Kayode Salami & Monday Oki and released on the Nigerian record label “Skylark Records”.

Produced by the legendary Nigerian figure Odion Iruoje, M. Tee Mac is backed on this album by the “Tee Mac Collection” band, that includes some of the best musicians of that era as :

Tee Mac Omatshola Iseli : Writings, Composition & Arrangements, Composition, Flute, Lead Vocals, Tenor Saxophone ;

For today, I’d like to share with you “I Love Abidjan“, a bouncy Boogie Soul Funk track from Burkina Faso (west africa) with killer bass lines & guitar, taken from the 2nd album of the Burkinabe producer, composer, singer Moustapha Laabli Thiombiano, who used to be a really influent man in the West African media world (considered a pioneer of free radio in Africa, he is the founder of Horizon FM, TVZ and Miss Burkina radio stations).

This album – as the three he recorded – was released on “Afroc”, the record label he ran from Hollywood (USA, where he used to live in the 80s) in partnership with the legendary Ivorian label “Maïkano”.

It was recorded between Ivoary Coast (J.B.Z. recording studios in Abidjan) & the United States (Golden Sound & Backroom studios, Hollywood) and included great African & American musicians of that era, as :

Moustapha Laabli Thiombiano : Arrangements, Composition & Writings, Bass Guitar, Composition, Drums, Guitar, Liner Notes, Percussion, Vocals ;

Leila Thigpen, Sylvia St. James, Vida Veader : Vocals ;

Following this previous article, I’d like to share with you for today “Disco Baby“, an monster dance floor friendly Cosmic Afro Disco Boogie Funk track with awesome bass line & synth parts, recorded in 1981 by the mythical Nigerian composer & trumpetist Etubom Rex Williams, who recorded dozen of albums & singles.

On this late privately pressed album, Etubom Rex Williams – known to be one of the masters of the Highlife musical genre – tries himself to the Disco Boogie genre, unusual but successful experience for him !

Under the name “Nato Funky Stars” band, this album includes the following musicians :

Asuquo Udoh :  Percussion ;

Felix Nsango : Drums ;

Willy Roy : Keyboards ;

For today, I wanted to share with you “Spell Bound“, an awesome Afro Disco Soul track from Nigeria & Cameroun with crazy Synth sounds, taken from “Disco Season”, the sole LP of Nigerian / Cameroonian band “PSK” recorded between Nigerian (Godiac Studios of Enugu city) & Jamaïca (at the mythical Treasure Isle Studios)  in 1980 on the private record label “Jeantos Inter“.

The group included some of the best Nigerian & Cameroonian of that era, such as Willy Nfor amongst others as :
